NITRIDING TREATMENTS

Gas Nitriding.

Nitriding/Nitrocarburising
Gaseous nitriding/nitrocarburising can be performed on a wide range of component sizes to provide a very hard surface coat.

When ammonia is heated to nitriding temperature of around 500 degrees centigrade it dissociates into its components of hydrogen and nitrogen if a catalyst is present. In nitriding steel is the catalyst.

In simple terms the result is a nitrogen rich layer at the surface of steel which can be, dependant on the material treated, up to 1000 Hv.

One of the great advantages that nitriding has over most other forms of case hardening is the minimum amount, and in some instances, total lack of distortion that is produced by this low temperature treatment.

In common with conventional carburizing treatments, nitrided components can have any areas not requiring treatment masked off. This is available for all treatment listed below.

Size Ranges available are:
Nitriding
    1: 3835mm long x 406mm dia
     2: 3048mm long x 508mm dia
     3: 1600mm long x 1219mm wide X 600mmdeep
     4: 1219mm long x 838mm wide X 435mm deep
Nitrocarburising
      1: 1067mm long x 254mm dia
      2: 456mm long x 406mm dia

Gaseous Nitriding – process time/case depth
A 50 hour treatment time will give a MINIMUM case depth of 0.4mm when applied to En40 or En41 material. For all other materials this same treatment will give a MAXIMUM case depth of 0.4mm
This process is available once per week, on Tuesday's, please ensure all work is at the Windsor street site by 12.00 noon.

A 72 hour treatment time will give a MINIMUM case depth of 0.6mm when applied to En40 or En41 material.

This process is available once per week, on Friday's, please ensure all work is at the Windsor street site by 12.00 noon.
For all other materials this same treatment will give a MAXIMUM case depth of 0.6mm.

Gaseous Nitrocarburising – process time/case depth
A 12 hours treatment time will give a case depth of 0.15mm – 0.2mm.
This process is available 5 days per week, Monday through Friday, please ensure all work is at the Windsor street site by 12.00 noon.

Nitrocarburising of plain low carbon steels gives a very wear resistant though very thin case.
